New Jersey Governor Chris Christie fired his education commissioner, Bret Schundler, after Schundler wouldn’t resign voluntarily. Schundler, the conservative former mayor of Jersey City who had previously run for governor,  told Christie he had tried to give correct information after a bungled question during a hearing on the Race to the Top, which could have netted the state $400 million in school funding.  Christie said that a videotape of the conference did not support Schudler’s explanation.

“I was extremely disappointed to learn that the videotape of the Race to the Top presentation was not consistent with the information provided to me,” Christie said in a press release. “As a result, I ordered an end to Bret Schundler’s service as New Jersey’s Education Commissioner and as a member of my administration.”

But Schundler, a small-government conservative, said he got himself fired rather than resign so he could collect benefits.
