Against the steady drumbeat of anti-Muslim sentiment, a Texas mosque and educational center was vandalized by fire and graffiti, causing $20,000 worth of damage. (via Think Progress). A national debate is raging about the value of having an Islamic educational center at Ground Zero.  Just this weekend, Liz Cheney opined that religious freedom doesn’t apply to the project’s founder, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, because she doesn’t agree with his past statements and alleged associations.

On Friday, members of the Dar El-Eman Islamic Education Center, in South Arlington, found “graffiti depicting Uncle Sam and Allah in a sexual position spray-painted in the parking lot.” Then, early Sunday morning, in a case of suspected arson, a fire destroyed playground equipment at the mosque, causing $20,000 worth of damage. The vandals also cut a pipe, allegedly thinking that it was a natural gas line. The playground equipment had been purchased with funds raised from “relatives, neighbors and friends” of the center’s students.

The real radicals here aren’t those who want to peacefully pray and live the American dream.  The real radicals, the extremists, are those who claim the United States Constitution doesn’t apply to the people with whom they disagree. The real extremists are those who would take torch to a children’s playground, depriving them of their facilities, because those children worship differently than the arsonists.
