NAACP Denounces Limbaugh’s Steinbrenner Comments

Hilary Shelton, Director to the Washington Bureau of the NAACP, appeared on radio with me to discuss his group’s proclamation condemning racist elements in the Tea Party movement.  I also played for Mr. Shelton recent comments by Rush Limbaugh on the death of George Steinbrenner: “That cracker made a lot of African Americans millionaires.”

Shelton: It’s outrageous. Clearly Rush Limbaugh has reached down to the depths and is so desperate for ratings points that he’ll say anything as outrageous as he needs to get people to pay attention to him.  I think it’s time for his sponsors to pay close attention to how they would probably not want to be associated with that level of mockery and offensiveness.  And, quite frankly, I think that people should think about whether they really want to support sponsors that continue to promote that kind of rhetoric.

Colmes: Are you suggesting that the NAACP might, itself, take action to start a campaign against sponsors of Rush Limbaugh?

Shelton: I don’t know anything like that, but quite frankly it’s the kind of thing that I think not only the NAACP, but any American of good will would wonder why we would allow our airwaves to be contaminated…

Colmes: Well, let me ask you then, Sir,  Mr. Shelton, do you think the NAACP would consider taking action against the sponsors of Rush Limbaugh based on those kinds of statements.

Shelton: There is no such policy being considered at this point. I’d be out of line and out of order to suggest there is.
