GOP Congressman Blames Sarah Palin And Right-Wing Talk Radio For Poisonous Demagoguery

South Carolina Congressman Bob Inglis, a 12-year incumbent who was defeated in a primary last month, says right-wing talk show hosts, and Sarah Palin in particular, are responsible for “poisonous” demagoguery. (h/t Think Progress)

He cited a claim made famous by Palin that the Democratic health care bill would create “death panels” to decide whether elderly or sick people should get care.

“There were no death panels in the bill … and to encourage that kind of fear is just the lowest form of political leadership. It’s not leadership. It’s demagoguery,” said Inglis, one of three Republican incumbents who have lost their seats in Congress to primary and state party convention challengers this year.

Inglis comes from the Jack Kemp school of Republicanism, and feels the tone put forth by the right wing gets in the way of focusing on issues like budget deficits and energy security. He was booed at town hall meetings when he challenged those who questioned the president’s citizenship and patriotism, and says voters will eventually turn away from those who are “preying on their fears.”
