Eleven GOP Senators Who Backed Comprehensive Immigration Reform Now Don’t

President Obama is pressing 11 Republican senators who favored comprehensive immigration reform when George W. Bush was in office to stay consistent with that position.

Some of the 11 senators whose support is critical to his plans signaled Thursday that they are not ready to back reform this time around. They also denied that they had changed their positions for political reasons.

Andy Fisher, spokesperson for Sen.Richard Lugar (R-IN), says, “There really is not the political landscape to proceed with it at this time.” That sounds pretty political. John McCain’s position has changed since he’s in a tough primary battle with a more conservative opponent.  That also sounds pretty political. Many Republicans don’t want to tackle the immigration issue during an election year. Political? Who’s to say?
