New Texas School Curriculum: Less On Slavery And Civil Rights; More On Biblical Values And The Confederacy

The Texas School board has revised its Social Studies and history curriculum to satisfy the conservative political agenda of its board members. More emphasis will be put on the Confederacy, Biblical values and free enterprise, and less on slavery, civil rights. Other changes water down criticism of Senator Joe McCarthy’s anti-communist witchhunt in the 1950s and portray the UN’s funding for international humanitarian relief and environmental initiatives as threats to individual freedom and U.S. sovereignty.

Students will be required to study conservative organisations and movements such as the Moral Majority.

Ronald Reagan has been added to a list of “great Americans”, while country music, but not hip hop, can be described as an important cultural movement.

Other states will get textbooks that reflect this based on what is being done in Texas, because Texas orders so many books that the content therein isn’t confined to orders in that state.

During the monthslong process of creating the guidelines, conservatives successfully strengthened the requirements on teaching the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation’s Founding Fathers and attempted to water down rationale for the separation of church and state.

The standards will refer to the U.S. government as a “constitutional republic,” rather than “democratic,” and students will be required to study the decline in the value of the U.S. dollar, including the abandonment of the gold standard.

Conservatives say the Texas history curriculum has been unfairly skewed to the left after years of Democrats controlling the board.
