John McCain A Maverick? He No Longer Approves This Message

John McCain is running away from the “maverick” label now that he’s in a primary race against a more conservative opponent.  J.D. Hayworth, McCain’s challenger, is calling himself, “the consistent conservative.” McCain counters by denying his brand.

“I never considered myself a maverick,” he told [David Margolick of Newsweek]. “I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities.”

But on the stump with Sarah Palin on September 18, 2008, Mccain said, “What to you expect of two mavericks, to agree on everything? Heh?”

A campaign ad promoted McCain as “The Original Maverick,” followed by, “I’m John McCain and I approve this message.”
