An extremist group called Guardians of the Free Republics is being watched by the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the police after sending letters to 30 governors warning them to leave office or they’d be removed. The FBI and DHS issued a joint statement.

“DHS and FBI are aware of the letters sent to governors and while there does not appear to be credible or immediate threats of violence attached to the letters, we are working with state and local authorities and continue to assess the matter,” the joint statement said.

Guardians of the Free Republics says it wants to “restore America” by peacefully dismantling parts of the government.

The FBI associated the letter with “sovereign citizens,” most of whom believe they are free from all duties of a U.S. citizen, such as paying taxes or needing a government license to drive. A small number of these people are armed and resort to violence, according to the intelligence report.

The group lists some of its “immediate goals,” such as:

  • Ending foreclosure and bank collection actions immediately (our first and seventh directives)
  • Ending tax prosecutions immediately (second and sixth directives)
  • Ending invasions, prosecutions and detentions for fictitious crimes against the state that lack an injured party other than insurrection, treason and frauds against the United States (third and eighth directives)
  • Arrest and shackling of the District  Court of the District of Columbia (Phase 2, sixteenth directive)

They claim that their plan has the cooperation of “high-ranking members of the military.  Their rationale, they say, is to be to “restore Biblical law to a devoutly secular population.” “Dr. Sam Kennedy” assures visitors to their site, “You are not alone.”
