Far-Right Tea Party Candidates Outpolling Mainstream Republicans

Texas Senator John Cornyn, who heads the National Republican Senatorial Committee, isn’t having as much success with his candidates as Jim DeMint, the further-right senator who is betting on tea party contenders.

It’s a split illustrating the deep divisions in the Republican party as it seems Washington’s establishment miscalculated who would be the better candidates from California to Florida.

[Florida’s Marco] Rubio (pictured) is the best example, as Florida Gov. Charlie Crist’s support – especially among Republicans – has plunged this year. That’s one reason why NRSC Chairman John Cornyn is singing Rubio’s praises and promising not to bash him despite backing Crist as the early favorite to win the open seat in the Sunshine State.

Straw polls in other states could indicate a trend.

Former Sen. Dan Coats (R-IN), a top recruit to run for the seat Sen. Evan Bayh is vacating, came in last in a very small straw poll conducted by a tea party group backing the candidate who prevailed, State Sen. Marlin Stutzman.

Senate Conservatives Fund candidate Chuck DeVore won a California straw poll over the NRSC’s preferred candidate former Hewlett Packard executive Carly Fiorina, though the legitimacy of the poll has been called into question.

So, is the trend that the Republican Party is moving even further to the right?
