Former First Lady Laura Bush has expressed support for President Obama’s school speech, saying, it’s “really important for everyone to respect the president of the United States.”

In an interview with CNN, Mrs. Bush, a former school teacher, said, “There’s a place for the president of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children” to stay in school. And she said parents and others also need to send that message.

Mrs. Bush, asked about former Vice President Cheney’s recent remarks, said that he “has every right to speak out. … It’s certainly Vice President Cheney’s right to say whatever he wants to say.”  As for those parents who object to the president talking to their kids, she said parents certainly have the right “to choose what they want their children to hear in school,” and added, “We’re polarized. … A lot of people on the right, a lot of people on the left. We’ve seen that for the last eight years. … We’re still seeing it.”

In another part the interview, Laura Bush says her husband will be remembered for standing for freedom, for standing “for the freedom of 50 million people in Afghanistan and Iraq.” When it’s suggested by Zain Verjee that her husband also represented “divisiveness and destructiveness,” Mrs. Bush responds by saying, “Well, I would say that that’s absolutely not right, ” that those who believe that “don’t have the right view of what his responsibilities are were.”
