Tim Rutten: We’re Teaching Kids Paranoia By Boycotting Pres Speech

Tim Rutten in the LA Times (right), explains how the calls to boycott President Obama’s education speech teaches our kids a disturbing lesson.

According to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Obama will “challenge students to work hard, set educational goals and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.”

One group is urging parents to demand that their children be excused from watching the president and be sent instead to the school library to read the Founding Fathers. (The theory, one supposes, is that a good dose of the Federalist Papers will inoculate the young against Obama’s attempts to subvert the republic through good grades.)

Yeah, send the kids to read the words or people whose relationship with people of Obama’s skin color was one of ownership.  In Texas there’s lots of support for taking kids out of school entirely for the day. God forbid they might, by accident, stumble upon a message from a United States president advising them to stay in school.

I fear for our nation, too. But not because of a president who speaks to school children (as did the three most recent Republican presidents, without incident), but because of those who are so paranoid that they have to keep the kids way from school for fear of left-wing indoctrination, living in fear of words emanating from the President of the United States.
