Texas Tenthers Want to Seceed From The Union

Tenthers, as profiled here recently, are those who believe most legislation meant to improve American lives is prohibited by the Constitution.  A group of them in Texas, known as the Texas Nationalist Movement, is demanding either sovereignty or secession.  They conducted a rally Saturday afternoon at the Capitol in Austin.  (h/t Think Progress).

So far 12 states are mirroring our “Sovereignty or Secession” movement.

We must stand up and be counted or we will find ourselves in another government. Either we restore America, we will live in a Marxist dictatorship, or we will secede and start over again.

Their petition calls for secession if their demands aren’t met.

In the event our full and complete Individual and State Sovereignty is not restored to us immediately by the United States federal government, then, We hereby demand that our State public servants move immediately for complete Secession from the United States of America that we may form a new government that will adhere to the founding principles upon which our government was laid as specified and declared and authorized by the Declaration of Independence of the united States of America.

One has to wonder where Governor Rick Perry is on this. He’s previously expressed sympathy for this kind of movement.

“We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we’re a pretty independent lot to boot.”
