GOP To Sotomayor: You’re Basically In

Republican senators won’t block the vote that will likely make her the next member of the Supreme Court. She appears to have earned the respect of some of the most conservative members of the Senate.

“Thank you for giving us such a cordial response, and I am mightily impressed,” said Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).

Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), who has discussed supporting her, told Sotomayor that her “record as a judge has not been radical by any means.”

“You have been very reassuring here today and throughout this hearing that you’re going to try to understand the difference between judging and whatever political feelings you have about groups or gender,” he said.

And even though ranking Judiciary Committee member Jeff Sessions says he won’t support any effort to filibuster the nomination, there are still those who will use Sotomayor for their own political gain. The NRA says it will oppose her nomination;  Ralph Reed is advising Republicans to vote against her and make “her an issue in key races next year.”  Really? Does the GOP want to be seen as using a popular nominee, the first Latina woman on the high court, to play politics?
