So, last night they find the car belonging to the South Carolina governor in a parking lot at Columbia’s airport, puncturing holes in the story of him going hiking on the Appalachian Trail (thus, avoiding “Naked Hiking Day“).  Will Folks at FITSNEWS says he was outright lied to by the governor’s staff.  But the staff may not have been told the whole story by the governor himself.

Palmetto Scoop has dubbed it “Waldogate.”  And Gina Smith, a reporter for The State newspaper in Columbia got a few words out of the governor, prior to his 2PM news conference today.

Sanford, in an exclusive interview with The State, said he decided at the last minute to go to the South American country to recharge after a difficult legislative session in which he battled with lawmakers over how to spend federal stimulus money.

Sanford said he had considered hiking on the Appalachian Trail, an activity he said he has enjoyed since he was a high school student.

“But I said ‘no’ I wanted to do something exotic,” Sanford said “… It’s a great city.”

But Sanford wasn’t fully forthcoming with information, declining to answer Smith’s question as to whether he stayed in a hotel.

Sanford said he was alone on the trip. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.
