Sanford Called For Clinton To Resign Over Affair

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford made a number of statements during the Clinton era about the Lewinsky affair, most notably that Clinton should resign.

“I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign). I come from the business side. If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he’d be gone.” [Sanford on Clinton, The Post and Courier, 9/12/98]

Sanford voted for 3 out of the 4 articles of impeachment, including Article IV:

Article IV: Abuse of power

Article alleges abuse of power, charging the president with making misleading statements for the purpose of deceiving the people of the United States, his Cabinet and White House aides. The last charge also contends Clinton frivolously asserted executive privilege and made perjurious statements to Congress in his answers to the 81 questions asked him by the Judiciary Committee last month.

He discussed how harmful lying is to the democratic process.

“The issue of lying is probably the biggest harm, if you will, to the system of Democratic government, representatives government, because it undermines trust. And if you undermine trust in our system, you undermine everything.” [Sanford on Clinton, CNN, 2/16/99]

Sanford was most offended that Clinton lied to his wife.

The bottom line, though, is he still lied. He lied under a different oath, and that is the oath to his wife. So it’s got to be taken very, very seriously.” [Sanford on Livingston, CNN, 12/18/98]

Sanford also believes that traditional marriage must be protected from gays getting married.

“As Jenny and I are the parents of four little boys, we’ve always taught our kids that marriage was something between a man and a woman.” [The Post and Courier, 2/11/04]

Sanford proclaimed October 15-21, 2006 as “Celebrate Marriage Week.”  The 19th was “Celebrate Your Spouse Day.”

WHEREAS, when entered into wisely, marriage can enrich the lives of individuals, homes, families, and communities; and

WHEREAS, as an affirmation of a man’s and a woman’s dedication to each other, the vows of marriage can provide the foundation for a lifetime of joy; and

WHEREAS, Celebrate Marriage Week recognizes the dedication of married couples throughout our state for their commitment to working together to achieve common goals.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mark Sanford, Governor of the Great State of South Carolina, do hereby proclaim October 15 – 21, 2006, as CELEBRATE MARRIAGE WEEK and October 19, 2006, as CELEBRATE YOUR SPOUSE DAY throughout the state and encourage all South Carolinians to recognize the happiness marriage can bring when taken seriously and entered into wisely.

On June 4, Sanford spoke with FOX News producer Brian Gaffney for a special on the history of the conservative movement, and the Lewinski saga was discussed. Here is some of what Sanford had to say:

You ask any guy, particularly one in office, you’ve been screwing around on your wife– maybe there’s one percent or maybe there’s two percent or maybe there’s five percent. But 95 percent of the time, whoever it is, is gonna say no. And so, I think the public said no matter what Clinton did, whether he did or he didn’t do whatever it was that happened with Monica Lewinsky, is that guy gonna stand up and admit it. They said no, he’s not.

Sanford later said:

You know, if somebody’s getting a blow job in the– the Oval Office– that’s enough to tick off pretty much every soccer mom in America.

As it turns out the biggest threat to marriage is not gays; it’s heterosexual, cheating husbands.
