Comrade Means Friend, BTW

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, seen here (r) with Obama and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, referred to our president as “my new comrade.”  And plans were made for Obama to visit Moscow in July. Start your engines, the conservative blogosphere is about to go crazy.

I believe that we managed to establish contact. But Moscow lies ahead. I cannot say that we made much progress on the most serious issues,” [Obama] reporters, adding: “Let’s wait and see.”

“I liked the talks. It is easy to talk to him. He can listen. The start of this relationship is good,” he said, adding: “Today it’s a totally different situation (compared to Bush)… This suits me quite well.”

Referring to talks about NATO’s expansion to the east, which is opposed by Russia, Medvedev said, “Yesterday I spoke about this with my new comrade, President Obama.”  Indian Prime minister Manmohan Singh asked for Obama’s autograph for his daughter.  French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Obama is “a very open man, very open-minded, entirely in line with what we want – namely that politicians shoulder their responsibilities and face up to them.”

Obama was “totally different” and exuded the humility Bush only preached, Medvedev said. “He can listen,” Medvedev said. “We now see a completely different approach, and this suits me.”

Something tells me these kinds of accolades from world leaders won’t sit well with those who have the “us versus them” mentality.  With right wingers already referring to our American president as “Comrade Obama,” this will only feed the beast.  Let’s see how many applaud that we are working toward getting along well with our neighbors.
