Bobby Jindal And The Party Of No

Louisiana’s governor, who gave the Republican response last night, got poor reviews.  The Kansas City Star points out it was basically an attack on Democrats with little substance or vision.  He criticized Republicans, said Democrats were big spenders, applauded the American spirit, and offered no solutions.

John at C&L notes Jindal’s slap at the Democrats for promoting “levitation trains” in the stimulus bill.  The myth that $8 million was set aside for that has already been debunked.

A widely repeated claim that $8 billion is set aside for a “levitating train” to Disneyland is untrue. That total is for unspecified high-speed rail projects, and some of it may or may not end up going to a proposed 300-mph “maglev” train connecting Anaheim, Calif., with Las Vegas.

Jindal also misquoted Obama, leading one to believe the president thinks our best days are behind us:

“A few weeks ago, the President warned that our nation is facing a crisis that he said ‘we may not be able to reverse.’ Our troubles are real, to be sure. But don’t let anyone tell you that we cannot recover — or that America’s best days are behind her.”

What Obama actually said in a February 5, 2009 op-ed was quite different:

And if nothing is done, this recession might linger for years. Our economy will lose 5 million more jobs. Unemployment will approach double digits. Our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse.

Nowhere in that piece, or anywhere else, did Obama suggest our best days are behind us.

It’s always tough giving the response to a president who has pomp and circumstance on his side.  But Jindal seemed laconic, was poorly miked, and offered nothing other than warmed-over criticism of Democrats with nothing to offer in place of what he doesn’t like.  Once again, Republicans come across as “The Party of No.”
