Pelosi Movie A Sad Commentary On Right-Wing America

Alexandra Pelosi, that is, the daughter of you-know-who.  She told me on radio she doesn’t like the word “documentary,” because that makes it sound boring, something this movie ain’t.  “Right America: Feeling Wronged – Some Voices From the Campaign Trail” debuts Monday night on HBO.  Pelosi visited 28 states and gets a slice of embitterment from conservatives who feel ignored and misunderstood, especially by the so-called “liberal media.”

From the Pulpit Freedom Day in Bethlehem, Ga. to the NASCAR circuit, RIGHT AMERICA: FEELING WRONGED – SOME VOICES FROM THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL shows a country at war with itself over the religious and cultural identities that define America. Many interviewees were particularly incensed by what they saw as a lack of any meaningful media attention given to their message during the election campaign – including their views on such hotly contested issues as gun control, abortion rights, religion and gay rights – and by a perceived media bias against McCain and running mate Sarah Palin.

“The way the press handles the election, we feel like our side’s never being really represented, never really given a fair shake,” says one man. “It’s almost like they think of us as a bunch of hicks, a bunch of idiots. And they don’t even wanna hear our side or understand us.”

“The liberal media is selling the American people short,” observes one woman. “That’s ridiculous and people should be outraged. And millions and millions of us are.” “We’re the backbone of this country,” says another man. “We’re hardworkin,’ blue- collared workers that keep this country runnin.’ He [Obama] talks like he knows us; he doesn’t know us.”

While Michael Leahy at  the Washington Post feels this movie is a look at a segment of conservatism that doesn’t represent the whole, focusing mostly, it says, on “yahoos,”  David S. Glasier in the Ohio’s News Herald  praises Pelosi’s film-making ability.

The words of the people whose comments made it into the final cut of this documentary are full of anger, despair and disdain.

“What do McCain voters have in common?” Pelosi asks a 40-something women attending a McCain-Palin rally.

“We all hate the same things,” the woman replies without a trace of humor or irony in her voice.

Hatred, the woman says, is a unifying force. What a concept!

Punches to the gut keep coming in this documentary as McCain supporters and Obama haters flail away at intellectuals, liberals, the so-called mainstream media and other prime targets.

Just a couple of seconds into this clip, you can see the emotion among some who believe the wrong guy made it to the White House.  Then, Pelosi explains the thought behind the film.
