Finally: The World’s First Openly Gay Head Of State

Iceland is about to get the world’s first only openly gay head of state, Johanna Sigurdardottir, the country’s 66-year-old minister of social affairs and social security.  Prime Minister Geir Haarde resigned Monday after the collapse of the country’s main banks, currency and stock market.  In America, you have to wait sometimes years to replace an elected official who screws up.  That’s why perhaps a parliamentary form of government may be healthier.

And they’re not so hung up over there about sleeping companions.  In Britain, there’s one openly gay member of Parliament, Angela Eagle of the Labour Party. In the US there are just three openly gay members of Congress, all Democrats: Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Barney Frank of Massachusetts, and Jared Polis of Colorado.   And who knows how many others are gay but closeted.

Sigurdardottir lists author and playwright Jonina Leosdottir, 54, as her spouse on her ministry website. She has two children from an earlier marriage.
