Woman Claims Saying “Merry Christmas” Got Her Fired

Tonia Thomas refused to say “Happy Holidays”, and says Counts-Oakes Resorts Properties, Inc, a vacation rental company, fired her for saying “Merry Christmas.”  The company says it’s a Christian company that celebrates Christmas and that Thomas is a disgruntled employee.

“I hold my core Christian values to a high standard and I absolutely refuse to give in on the basis of values. All I wanted was to be able to say ‘Merry Christmas’ or to acknowledge no holidays,” [Thomas] said Tuesday. “As a Christian, I don’t recognize any other holidays.”

G. Thomas Harper, a labor attorney and expert on Florida employment law doubts that Thomas can win her case.

“I wouldn’t think an employee has the right to insist (on saying Merry Christmas) unless that really is a tenet of their faith. She would have to make a strong case that was part of her beliefs, if not, it becomes insubordination,” he said.”

Thomas told FOX News that the phrase “Happy Holidays” offends her and that she refuses to participate in “secularizing Christmas.”

“I said I have a problem with saying ‘Happy Holidays,'” Thomas told FOXNews.com. “The world … groups Christmas with other holidays, and that’s offensive to me as a Christian.”
