Goodbye Tom Tancredo

A Catholic turned evangelical Christian, he blasted the Pope for defending immigrants.  His presidential campaign was defined by an ad he ran suggesting Latino immigrants are rapists and drug dealers.  He said Miami was like a third world country, and wanted attack Islam by destroying Mecca. 

Now, the Colorado congressman is retiring.  He may run for governor in 2010.  

Last summer, Tancredo headlined a rally of the Minutemen anti-illegal immigration group at a Denver park during the Democratic National Convention. Just a couple dozen showed up.

And maybe, to get Republicans elected again, a different kind of conservative has to appear.
