One Person’s Socialist Is Another’s Tax Cutter

As conservatives are busy running around trying to stick Obama with the “socialist” label, Rudy Giuliani and I got into a discussion about whether John McCain’s promised $5000 tax credit for medical care is wealth redistribution.  Of course, when you give tax credits, that’s exactly what you’re doing, as the money has to come from somewhere.   John McCain’s own website refers to it as “effectively cash”.

While still having the option of employer-based coverage, every family will receive a direct refundable tax credit – effectively cash – of $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families to offset the cost of insurance.
