Which Way Will The Right Go?

With more and more GOPers jumping ship every day, and with the finger-pointing having already begun, one has to wonder who will win the Republican tug-of-war that is sure to ensue.  Former Bush 43 speechwriter David Frum has gone so far as to tell Republicans to give up on McCain and direct resources to senatorial races.  There is dissonance between the top and the bottom of the ticket, with Palin likely distancing herself from McCain in order to set herself up for a 2012 run.

So, what is to become of the Republican Party?  Palin, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee may each vie to become the new standard-bearer.

The hard-right Palin/talkradio crowd will say they didn’t do enough to destroy Barack Obama and push a conservative agenda.  Those who admire the candidate McCain used to be will claim that had McCain not allowed the campaign to get away from him, had he stuck to his principles and remained the maverick, he either would have won or would have lost with dignity, and that the far-right has ruined the party.

The struggle among its denizens to become the new face of the Republican Party will be fascinating to watch.  And while they’re struggling, they’ll continue to tear down Obama, criticize everything he does, and bitterly plot a return to power.
