Another Republican Endorses Obama

After Scott McClellan joined Colin Powell in crossing party lines to support Barack Obama, we wondered who might be the next Republican to join the trend. Now we know the answer. It’s former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld.

“Senator Obama is a once-in-a-lifetime candidate who will transform our politics and restore America’s standing in the world,” Weld said in a statement. “We need a president who will lead based on our common values and Senator Obama demonstrates an ability to unite and inspire. Throughout this campaign I’ve watched his steady leadership through trying times and I’m confident he is the best candidate to move our country forward.”

Weld is no RINO; he supported Mitt Romney during the primaries. And he probably won’t be the last high-profile Republican to endorse the Democratic nominee. That isn’t sitting well with Republican loyalists. Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer says the “ship-jumpers” are “wet-fingered conservatives leaping to Barack Obama before they’re left out in the cold without a single state dinner for the next four years.”

At the rate that Republicans are jumping ship, it won’t be long until we find out who will be the next to leap.
