White Screen of Death

Over the past couple of days some of you may have been unable to access Alan.com, instead just hitting a blank white page with no error message displayed.  We’ve been scratching our heads for the past two days and frantically searching Google for some explanation as to what’s going on.

The software that powers Alan.com is called WordPress, and while we still don’t know precisely what’s causing the issue, we’ve narrowed the cause down to one particular WordPress plugin that, unfortunately, also powers the Chat Stream.

For the time being we’re going to leave the Chat Stream disabled until we can do some further testing.  We want to bring it back online as soon as possible, but until we can prevent the problem from recurring we’re going to keep it offline.
