GOP Ignores Charges Of Its Own Voter Registration Fraud

While Republicans are busy trying to tie ACORN to Barack Obama because of allegations of fraud, they’re conveniently ignoring charges that they are deceiving voters into registering Republican.  California voters are claiming that a group called Young Political Majors, or YPM, deceptively registered them as Republicans while telling them they were signing petitions calling for tougher penalties against child molesters.

Election officials and lawmakers have launched investigations into the activities of YPM workers in Florida and Massachusetts. In Arizona, the firm was recently a defendant in a civil rights lawsuit. Prosecutors in Los Angeles and Ventura counties say they are investigating complaints about the company.

The firm, which a Republican Party spokesman said is paid $7 to $12 for each registration it secures, has denied any wrongdoing and says it has never been charged with a crime.

Some people were told they had to be Republican to sign the petition; others found out their party had been switched without their knowledge.

Lydia Laws, a Palm Springs retiree, said she was angry to find recently that her registration had been switched from Democrat to Republican.

Laws said the YPM staffer who instructed her to identify herself on a petition as a Republican assured her that it was a formality, and that her registration would not be changed. Later, a card showed up in the mail saying she had joined the GOP.

Mark Jacoby, the founder of YPM, says investigators for California Secretary of State Debra Bowen have told him his company has done nothing wrong, but Bowen’s office says it doesn’t seals of approval to voter registration groups.

A YPM worker in Massachusetts testified at a 2004 legislative hearing that she tricked voters into signing a petition to ban gay marriage by telling them they were signing something to allow alocholic beverages to be sold in supermarkets.  Jacoby claims that the worker in question was doing this while on loan to another company.

Of course, can you blame Republicans these days?  Would anybody want to wear that party label voluntarily?
