High Anxiety: Conservatives Speak Out Against Palin

First, it was Kathleen Parker of the National Review jumping off the Palin bandwagon.

Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first.

Do it for your country.

Then it was Bernie Goldberg who didn’t disagree with Parker, proclaiming,

“I hate to say it but [Parker] may be right.”

Now, the chorus is growing.  Former Bush 43 speechwriter David Frum weighs in:

“I think she has pretty thoroughly – and probably irretrievably – proven that she is not up to the job of being president of the United States,” David Frum … who is now a conservative columnist, said in an interview.

Florida Republican chairman Jim Greer:

“I think the Katie Couric interview shows that she needs to be briefed more on certain aspects. She continues to be viewed very positively by the base of the party, but she needs to demonstrate that she’s got the knowledge and ability to be president should the need arise.”

Mike Murphy, former McCain advisor:

said Ms. Palin’s performance in the campaign had underlined his argument that she was a bad choice for Mr. McCain. Mr. Murphy said he was skeptical that she could turn it around in one debate.

Of course, the expectations for her performance in the upcoming debate are so low that she may come out ahead simply by showing she’s not in a coma.
