Bristol Wedding: McCain Riding Shotgun?

Just in time for the November 4 election, 17-year-old Bristol Palin may make it all legal with a wedding, say “Republican insiders.”

One can imagine the church lady saying, “How convenient!”  As the New York Post, a newspaper that supports McCain, puts it:

A cozy family photo op could also be a helpful distraction for the vice-presidential candidate if she can’t hold her own against Democratic veep nominee Joe Biden at this Thursday’s debate, a GOP analyst not affiliated with the campaign told The Post.

A wedding could also allow the McCain camp to reframe Palin in her strongest light: a tough-talking matriarch who puts family first, as evidenced by her devotion to her baby, Trig, who has Down syndrome.

McCain would likely have a front-row seat at a ceremony and be on the receiving end of a boatload of good will.

“What’s the downside?” a McCain source told the paper. “It would be wonderful. I don’t know that there has ever been a pre-election wedding before.”

Another GOP analyst said: “If a wedding occurred, it would be criticized by elites and those who think its gauche. But others will embrace it for the insight it gives into the family. And remember, everyone loves a wedding.”

Bristol becomes legal in some states, when she turns 18 on October 18, and the campaign doesn’t want her walking down the aisle when there’s too much to show.

“It would be fantastic,” said a McCain insider. “You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.”

McCain defenders bristle at the idea that any detractor might “attack” Palin’s family for political gain.  In fact, Palin has used the claim that Democrats have attacked her family for fundraising purposes.  However, the campaign has no problem using the family as a convenient prop when it suits their needs.
