Republican Afraid to Run As A Republican

Republican Dino Rossi has a problem. He wants to be governor of Washington state, but he knows that his party affiliation could have detrimental effects on his campaign. So, as The Seattle Times reports, Rossi came up with a clever solution:

When Rossi filed for office, he listed his party preference as “GOP Party.” Rossi has said he’s always used the term GOP to identify his party and isn’t trying to confuse voters about his party affiliation. But the Democrats, who argue the Republican Party has become a damaged brand, say that’s exactly what Rossi is doing.

Of course, he isn’t the first candidate to hide his Republican affiliation. And considering the extremely low popularity of the nation’s top Republican, Rossi probably won’t be the last.
