Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki supports Barack Obama’s proposal that US troops be gone in 16 months.  Maliki spoke to the German magazine Der Spiegel and it is clear he’d like American troops out as soon as possible.  Both George Bush and John McCain vowed in the past that any request by the Iraqi government for us to leave should  be honored.

“U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes.”

Maliki says he doesn’t want to tell Americans who to vote for, but

“Whoever is thinking about the shorter term is closer to reality. Artificially extending the stay of U.S. troops would cause problems.”
