McCain’s Apologist On His Gaffes: “So What?”

Add one more to the list of McCain “misspeaks”.  When a Democrat does it he or she is either a liar or ill-informed. When McCain does it he “misspeaks”.  In this case, the issue is the number of troops in iraq.  At a Friday town hall meeting in Wisconsin the candidate said we’re down to pre-surge levels.

The problem is, there are 155,000 troops in Iraq, not the pre-surge number of 130,000.  McCain spinner Randy Scheunemann says McCain meant to say the troops will be drawn down, and we shouldn’t debate verb tenses.  Interestingly Arizona senator John Kyl says we should stop trying to “nitpick the tense of the verb,”  and that McCain “misspoke.”

“Take the worst possibility here, which is Sen. McCain misspoke. And that because of the specific words used, what he said was not entirely accurate, Ok, so what? What does that amount to? That’s the worst possible scenario.”

“So what?”  Can you imagine them saying “so what?” about an Obama faux pas? Think Progress has video of McCain saying he didn’t “misspeak.”  Here are some other McCain “misspeaks” that we chronicled earlier.
