Kennedy has a glioma and likely will require chemotherapy and radiation therapy, neurologist Dr. Lee Schwamm of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and Dr. Larry Ronan, a primary physician there, said in a statement..According to the Society for Neuroscience, about 20,000 Americans are diagnosed with a glioma every year and more than half die within 18 months.

However, still to be determined is how rapidly the tumor is growing.

Gliomas are a type of tumor arising from brain cells known as glial cells. They can cause a range of symptoms, including the seizure Kennedy suffered but also headaches and unexplained vomiting.

Some are high-grade and can grow and spread rapidly. Low-grade tumors, while malignant, can grow more slowly and may not even require treatment for years.
