King At Last

As the media and the general public continue to demonize and revile the reverend Jeremiah Wright for saying things that are “outrageous” and “incendiary”, lest we forget some of the statements of the revered (that’s “reverend” without the “n”) Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today – my own government.” (“Beyond Vietnam”, April 4, 1967)

And did he hate the military?

“They watch as we poison their water, as we kill a million acres of their crops. They must weep as the bulldozers roar through their areas preparing to destroy the precious trees. They wander into the towns and see thousands of thousands of the children, homeless, without clothes, running in packs on the streets like animals. They see the children degraded by our soldiers as they beg for food.” (April 30, 1967)

“We’ve committed more war crimes almost than any nation in the world, and I’m going to continue to say it. And we won’t stop it because of our pride and our arrogance as a nation.”

“God didn’t call America to engage in a senseless, unjust war as the war in Vietnam. And we are criminals in that war. We’ve committed more war crimes almost than any nation in the world, and I’m going to continue to say it. And we won’t stop it because of our pride and our arrogance as a nation.” (“The Drum Major Instinct”, February 4, 1968)

“A nation that put as many Japanese in a concentration camp as they did in the ‘40’s…will put black people in a concentration camp.” (Mongomery, Alabama, 1968)

“America is going to Hell, if we don’t use her wealth, If America does not use her vast resources of wealth to…make it possible for all of God’s children to have the basic necessities of life, she, too will go to Hell.” (March 18, 1968)

Today’s prophet is yesterday’s demon. As Luke 11:47 says, “You build tombs for the very prophets your ancestors killed long ago.”
