When There Truly Is Guilt By Association

Steve Young has it right. There is absolutely no evidence that Barack Obama agrees with any of the controversial statements of Reverend Wright. And Reverend Wright never ran for anything. But George W. Bush has made many controversial and incendiary statements. How many of them does John McCain believe? Isn’t that a more relevant question? John McCain may not have sat in a particular pew for 20 years, but he did consort with a president who has made comments like:

  • “There’s no cave deep enough for America, or dark enough to hide.” — John McCain’s friend and supporter, George W. Bush, on finding Osama Bin Laden, Aug. 29, 2002
  • “But all in all, it’s been a fabulous year for Laura and me.” — John McCain’s friend and supporter, George W. Bush, summing up his first year in office, Dec. 20, 2001
  • “We are making steadfast progress.” — John McCain’s friend and supporter, George W. Bush, June 9, 2003
  • “Bring them on.” — John McCain’s friend and supporter, George W. Bush, concerning attacks on our troops in Iraq, July 23, 2003

So, which association is more significant in the heat of the presidential campaign? The relationship between the comments of Jeremiah Wright and the policies of Barack Obama? Or those of George W. Bush and John McCain?
