His body is ravaged. Without a new liver he’ll be dead within days.  But Timothy Garon is being refused a transplant because he used marijuana, even though it was used legally. Committees that decide who gets access to the limited number organs available take into account whether patients use drugs or alcohol, worried that these are indicators of addictive personalities.

One hospital refused Garon unless he held to six months of abstinence.  Another insisted he enroll in a drug treatment program.  And Garon is charged with manufacturing marijuana, even though he stayed within the law on that one, too.

So, a doctor legally prescribes an herb, the patient follows the law, and he is denied a life-saving measure as a result.  This is a medical outrage.
