Rose refers to the book “What’s the Matter with Kansas“, the Thomas Frank book that discusses that people who aren’t participating in the American Dream often vote on faith and morality issues rather than economic interests.  Obama talks about Galesburg, a town in his own Illinois, a town that’s been losing jobs, where men connect with family and friends by doing things like hunting, and women may connect with friends and family at church, and these ways of socially interacting give them something solid to stand on in tough economic times.
