McCain: No Yiddishe Kup

First McCain mixed up his Iran/Iraq enemies.

He said several times that Iran, a predominately Shiite country, was supplying the mostly Sunni militant group, al-Qaeda. In fact, officials have said they believe Iran is helping Shiite extremists in Iraq.

It took Joe Lieberman to correct him:

McCain said it was “common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that’s well known. And it’s unfortunate.” A few moments later, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, standing just behind McCain, stepped forward and whispered in the presidential candidate’s ear. McCain then said: “I’m sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda.”

Now, Joltin’ Joe has had to do it again, as Think Progress points out.

Speaking in Israel yesterday, McCain referred to the Jewish holiday Purim as “their version of Halloween.” After McCain spoke, Lieberman stepped in and gingerly took blame for McCain’s mistake, saying that he had given McCain the false impression of the holiday’s meaning.

Can  you imagine if some liberal Democrat hade made such gaffes?  The cons would try to use the first one to prove that they’re weak on security, and the second that they’re weak on Israel.

We know that Al Gore was Lieberman’s Shabbos goy.  What does that make Lieberman’s role with McCain?
