These people have no shame. The want to scare us into submitting to an overreaching government. They want to take away our right to privacy, and our right to go after companies that invade the sanctity of our lives. Yesterday, Bush had this to say:

“At this moment, somewhere in the world, terrorists are planning new attacks on our country. Their goal is to bring destruction to our shores that will make September the 11th pale by comparison.”

In spite of the fact that you can get a judge on the phone 24/7 to get a warrant, which is approved 90% of the time; in spite of the fact that you have up to three days after the fact to request a warrant; in spite of the fact that eavesdropping can continue on targets already approved; in spite of the fact that Democrats were willing to extend the current law for 21 days while these issues could be worked out, we are being led to believe that our safety is compromised because the majority of our representatives (at least thus far) aren’t willing to cave in to Bush and the Republicans. Not that I have faith that that Democrats’ resolve will continue.

But facts shouldn’t get in the way of fear-mongering, right Congressman Ted Poe of Texas?

“I think there is probably joy throughout the terrorist cells throughout the world that the United States Congress did not do its duty today,” said Representative Ted Poe, Republican of Texas.

Yes, Ted, bin Laden is in a Pakistani cave doing a jig and praising Allah that Democrats have a problem with one provision of the Protect America Act. For more on this, please read Glenn Greenwald’s excellent post. Among his points is that the FISA law has been consistently updated to keep pace with evolving technology, and when it was updated in October, 2001, the very law that our fear-mongering president now says will make America go dark, was roundly praised by him:

“This new law I sign today will allow surveillance of all communications used by terrorists, including e-mails, the Internet, and cell phones. As of today, we’ll be able to better meet the technological challenges posed by this proliferation of communications technology.”

One other note. Who falls for the Orwellian names they give these laws? “The Patriot Act” for one and, is this case, the “Protect America Act”. What we need to Protect America from are those who would decimate our Constitution.
