That’s what Reverend Peter Johnson, with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, says.

“We have ignored the essence of his life and the horror of his death,” said Mr. Johnson, 62, director of Texas operations for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, who marched with Dr. King through the segregated South. “We’ve allowed white America to escape the guilt of his assassination, and we’ve allowed black America to drift back into a coma.”
The yearly memorial, he says, should be moved to the anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, April 4.

Sound good?

Johnson told Amy Goodman:

“War is not the answer. Only love can conquer hate. If Bush is right, then Marvin [Gaye] was wrong. If Bush is right, then Mohandas Gandhi was wrong. If Bush is right, Henry David Thoreau was wrong. If Bush is right, Martin Luther King Jr. was wrong. If Bush is right, Jesus of Nazareth was wrong.”
