McConnell: Democrats should treat Trump ‘just like we treated…Obama’

Posted by | January 9, 2017 07:30 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Republicans want Donald Trump’s cabinet picks to be rushed through without a standard ethics review even though that’s contrary to what Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said in 2009. But since Trump was elected, McConnell has done a complete turnaround. To be clear, the president-elect himself has a staggering amount of conflicts of interest, none…

In other words, obstruct him at every turn. No problem.

  2. oldfart January 9th, 2017 at 08:25

    With pleasure, Mitch.

    OK.
Trump is not really the president because he was born in Kenya.

      …within seconds of each other…

  4. Hirightnow January 9th, 2017 at 08:27

Somehow, I don’t think that calling Trump a Kenyan, or photoshopping his face onto an African shaman, is the way to go here, Mitch…
Howsabout we just block him at every.
    Single.
    Freaking.
    Turn?

He wants Democrats to treat Trump the way they treated Obama so that Republicans can feel better about they way they behaved for the last 8 years, and so that people increasingly take the “a pox on both your houses” attitude towards government, because it invariably ends up favouring the Republicans.

Instead of trying to obstruct Trump at every turn, Democrats need to play a smarter, more mature game – start putting forward a lot of policies and laws that Republicans can’t publicly refuse. Make minor compromises to the ideals, for the time being, in order to leave Republicans with no choice but to either continue obstructing government themselves, or allow Democrats to remain in control of government policy.

The contrast between Democratic behaviour and Republican behaviour needs to be stark. And Democrats need to portray themselves as having “heard the voice of the people” (note the quotes around that phrase – I don’t view it as the voice of the people, just the voice of dimwits… but it’s all about the optics).

In short, it’s a lot better to let the Republicans be hoist by their own petards.

“The contrast between Democratic behaviour and Republican behaviour needs to be stark. ”

No offense Glen but aren’t we a little late arriving to the show ?
IMO, This contrast has been around since President Raygun.
The world will be hoist by the republican petard…
A pox on ALL houses would be a blessing compared to what may transpire in the future under a tRump administration…Please accept my apologies in advance…

It has been “going on” since then, but the last 8 years have been… different. Republicans used to obstruct because the policies went against their ideals. Now they’ll block policies that line up completely with their ideals, purely because of who put them forward.

I’m not saying that Democrats should let Republicans run rampant, or let Trump’s policies go through without real challenge. But Democrats have been either “fighting fire with fire” or trying to simply look mature (and thus being manipulated by the Republicans). It’s time to change the approach.

Republicans don’t know how to control themselves properly. It’s an opportunity for a lot of political judo – use the Republicans’ behaviour against them. If they’ll block policies purely because of who put them up, Democrats should put exactly those policies up that they can stomach and the Republicans like. Republicans either continue their stupid tactic, and fall flat on their face, or they support Democratic bills, which ends up being a huge bonus to Democrats.

        • oldfart January 9th, 2017 at 10:21

Never challenge a republican to a limbo contest.
Especially when they will control Washington…
They won’t have to pretend to play nice.
Let alone care if they fall flat on their face.
Their dream of the “big fix” has come true.
I do appreciate your thoughtful comments though.
The best defense is a good offense after all.
We shall see what the powers that be have in mind in due time.

          • Glen January 9th, 2017 at 11:13

That’s kind of my point, though – simply using the same tactics as the Republicans *is* challenging them to a limbo contest. If you play by their rules, you’ll lose, because they’re, quite honestly, better at playing by those rules (after all, they’ve been doing it for years, now).

That’s why I described it as political judo – the Republicans want to play “Chicken” with the world. And they want to do it because they know that Democrats, and the world at large, will swerve first (because Republicans are happy to see the world burn if they don’t win). To beat them, you have to change the game. “The best defense is a good offense” is a great idea when you’re playing a fair game… this is NOT a fair game, not as the Republicans have structured things.

So instead, you turn the Republicans against each other (I notice this is exactly what is happening now – perhaps the Democrats are already doing as I’m suggesting?). You work with the moderates, you keep pushing bills that the obstructionists will disagree with the moderates on, and you basically become the real power within congress despite being the minority party.

There’s a reason why McConnell wants Democrats to imitate the Republicans. It’s to his, and the Republicans’, benefit if they do.

            • oldfart January 9th, 2017 at 11:43

While I agree with your assessment, I do not share the same faith with you in our political process or the back bones of those elected officials to achieve it. republican moderates will be on the menu for reelections should they choose to oppose their party or work with Democrats. Only a series of poor decisions and the outcomes that follow will supply the motivation. We still have 11 days to go.
I’m of the opinion that only time will confirm your assessment.
I worry that by then it may be too late.

    • mark white January 13th, 2017 at 03:17

Demonrats do not have any policies or laws the public wants. That is why they have lost a thousand seats across America, And they sure as hell arent smart, mature, yes, they are ancient, but not smart.

      • Glen January 13th, 2017 at 07:58

You know, it’s quite advisable that, if you want to suggest that someone else, or more generally, a group of people, aren’t intelligent, then you do so in a message that doesn’t have grammatical errors and childish namecalling.

Incidentally, the Democrats won the popular vote in senate elections, and in the presidential election, and there have been articles about Republican voters who voted for Trump because he was against Obamacare… because they thought Obamacare was a failed system that was replaced by the Affordable Care Act.

Perhaps you should take that classic advice about people who live in glass houses…

  6. rat618 January 9th, 2017 at 09:53

I think someone in the Democratic House/Senate Leadership should go
back and find every written or video insult/demand Mitch hurled at Obama
and reproduce them with the word Obama changed to Trump….then release
them to the press and simply say Mitch wants us to treat Trump as he
treated Obama so here in Mitch’s own words….

  7. Suzanne McFly January 9th, 2017 at 10:23

Do the repubs hear themselves? Are they just being ironic like a comedian doing satire or they being completely ignorant about the paradox they have created like one of their voters?

    • Dan Eric January 15th, 2017 at 01:05

the republican party is owned by billionaires of wall street, big pharma and corporations since when did the rich ever help americans..it wont ever happen they will continue to lie and steal from us as they did for 40 years..voters are stupid and don’t learn from the past and they cant see a leopard never changes its spots..since that corrupt repub party is owned by the richest they will do their bidding as usual against us to get richer and more powerful..as always they will continue to put party before country..they don’t work for us its the other way around with the criminal republican party. We are in for a big huge fight soon, and we better be good and ready to fight them at every turn or we are doomed and we will all be poor

  8. Mike January 9th, 2017 at 10:28

    I wish they would ….

  9. Cyndy Williams-Wolf January 9th, 2017 at 11:51

    Okay….will do!
Do they hear themselves? Are they deaf?

  10. Lyndia January 9th, 2017 at 12:00

    I’ll do just that.

  11. pinballsdoll January 9th, 2017 at 12:56

    Deal!

  12. fahvel January 9th, 2017 at 12:59

ok!! just like a dog dropping smeared in work boot cleats.

  13. Bunya January 9th, 2017 at 13:56

Yes. Democrats should treat tRump exactly the way they treated Obama. Obstruct everything, trash him at every opportunity, demand his long form birth certificate and, when he produces it, refuse it, claiming it’s a forgery. Maybe we can post photo-shopped pictures of the Donald wearing a KKK outfit, and claim he’s a member in good standing.

    • mark white January 12th, 2017 at 13:26

      You’re a racist.

      • Bunya January 12th, 2017 at 14:04

If hating p*ssy grabbing, sexual deviant pedophiles, hell bent on destroying America makes me a “racist”, then I’m guilty as charged.
Besides, a racist like you really shouldn’t accuse others or being racist. That would be like David “diaperman” Vitter accusing Josh Duggar of being a pervert.

      • whatthe46 January 12th, 2017 at 14:15

you don’t own a mirror huh?

  14. David P. Turnbole January 11th, 2017 at 07:26

McKKKonnell said he would do everything in his power to make the President a one termer. That didn’t work out did it? So WE citizens need to make sure Drumpf is a less than one term dictator.

    • mark white January 12th, 2017 at 13:26

      So you’re a racist,

      • David P. Turnbole January 12th, 2017 at 16:47

And you’re a dickhead for not knowing a white man from a black man. Dear dear Mark. It’s so difficult apparently to see the truth with your head stuck that far up your ass.

        • mark white January 13th, 2017 at 03:13

          Youre still a racist.

          • David P. Turnbole January 13th, 2017 at 08:47

And you are apparently still a moron. You’re name may be white but at least I know enough to put capital letters in front of ALL of my name. Please find someone else less intelligent to harass.

            • mark white January 13th, 2017 at 14:49

All of my name? Funny how its always left wing morons like you who turn into grammar Nazis yet are far from perfect. Now who is the moron, David P. Cornhole? And a racist too, how nice.
