NBC: Timeline of mass shootings in America by active duty military and veterans

NBC has a timeline of veterans and active duty soldiers committing mass shootings in America.

Let’s get the obvious point out of the way: no, NBC New York has never made a timeline listing every mass shooting carried out by those who follow a certain ideology. When people of those ideology commit those shootings, we are buffeted with assurances that is is wrong and immoral to stigmatize millions based on the actions of a few. That courtesy evidently does not extend to our men in uniform.

The clear impression a reader would get is that serving in the military somehow causes one to carry out a mass shooting (I guess they’re going for PTSD?). There’s actually a lively debate on whether there’s a correlation between the two, but there’s nothing academic or nuanced about a listicle. Missing from a timeline is the fact that correlation does not imply causation: for one thing, mass shooters are nearly all men, and 24% of U.S. men are veterans.

We need to staff our VA’s with more mental health officials. At my VA, which is 2 hrs away on a good day, can schedule me with a doctor to access my needs in 2 months. Now that is just to see a doctor to refer me to another doctor, so the next doctor I see will be at least another 2 months. What about the vets with PTSD who need to speak to someone right now like the vet from Alaska?

Thank a Republican. They think… Love the war, hate paying for it.

The entire bush w term proved that statement to be completely true. I think w is the only one happy rump “won”, his presidency will look like a success in comparison.

I agree. But with Trump coming on and the republicans taking over I seriously doubt you’re going to see any more resources invested in the VA. If anything, they’re more likely to replace the VA with some kind of half-assed voucher system while destroying all the gains made by the ACA. If I were you, I’d prepare as best I can for the worst that could be imagined. That is exactly what I’m expecting across the board. A nation ruled by and for oligarchs. Just like in Russia.

I have health insurance (Tricare) so I will be fine. Unfortunately a lot of the people who use the VA don’t have insurance and they rely on it.
