Almond milk, soy milk, should not be labeled ‘milk’ say members of congress

They may ban these labels.

Twenty-five members of Congress say if it’s from soybeans, almond or rice, it should not be labeled as milk.

Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) and Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), leading the bipartisan charge against “fake milk,” signed a letter along with other congressional members, asking the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate and take action against manufacturers of “milk” that doesn’t come from cows.

They want the FDA to require plant-based products to adopt a name other than milk, which they say is deceptive.

Hey Comsey! A nonpartisan story! Awesome. I think that in terms of nutritional information maybe it should just be clearly labeled “Non Dairy” as it does fit the definition of milk. I do use them and Soy or Almond is clearly labeled on each “allergies”, so either way it’s not life or death. I don’t think they need to spend millions of dollars trying to decide.
    Webster’s
    Definition of milk
    1
a : a fluid secreted by the mammary glands of females for the nourishment of their young; especially : cow’s milk used as a food by humans
    b : lactation
    2
: a liquid resembling milk in appearance: as
    a : the latex of a plant
b : the juice of a coconut composed of liquid endosperm
c : the contents of an unripe kernel of grain

“milk” that doesn’t come from cows, so where does that leave goats milk

    • Larry Schmitt December 23rd, 2016 at 22:45

In some parts of the world they drink mare’s mil, sheep’s milk, camel’s milk, the Laplanders probably drink reindeer milk.

  3. Buford2k11 December 23rd, 2016 at 21:35

I thought it was established that no one would try or purchase a drink that is “nut juice”, and “milk” sounds so, so, motherly….can I interest anyone in some Rocky Mountain Oysters?

So what do they want to call Milk of Magnesia? So glad now that Trump is taking office, the Republican Congress is really looking to tackle the issues of the day.

Let the consumer decide if it matters.

    • Larry Schmitt December 23rd, 2016 at 22:47

Consumers don’t give a sh*t. Do you think anyone actually cares if almond milk is called almond milk? This is all about lobbyists, and the congressmen they have paid for.

      • TKList December 23rd, 2016 at 22:51

Milking the taxpayer. Empty calories or is it empty legislative hours?

  6. Larry Schmitt December 23rd, 2016 at 22:44

What about coconut milk? This is nothing more than the dairy lobby protecting their property.

  7. whatthe46 December 23rd, 2016 at 23:26

this is what these asses are concerned about? really? we have tRump, comey, rudy, the GOP engaged in treason and corruption and they are fighting over the labeling of almond milk. dumb asses.

  8. Dwendt44 December 23rd, 2016 at 23:46

It’s call Almond Milk because ‘Nut Juice’ wouldn’t sell.

  9. Kick Frenzy December 23rd, 2016 at 23:48

I think they have a valid point.

    I also think that I don’t give a rat’s ass.

They contain more vitamins and calcium than cows milk without antibiotics.
It is actually what milk should be.

    • Suzanne McFly December 24th, 2016 at 08:57

But the soybean milks haven’t lobbied the members of congress and therefore they lack proper representation (poor soybeans). The big farms are helping to re-elect these groups so they are properly taken care of.

With the recent discovery – or revelation , that cow’s milk contains millions of pus cells I wonder if pus content, the level of antibiotics to fight it and the traces of hormones which are given to cows to unnaturally stimulate milk production, should also be included in the contents of milk containers – if they are so concerned about correct labelling.

Thanks to that comment, I’ll never look at my morning coffee in quite the same way… ;)

          • Jungle_Bhoy December 25th, 2016 at 13:11

Don’t worry – the pus cells are actually dead – killed by the antibiotics – so you can swill them around in your mouth with no fear. Even if you are not vegetarian or vegan, soy milk tastes much much better in coffee anyway.

            • oldfart December 25th, 2016 at 14:09

              I was kidding ! ;)
I know the process of homogenization and pasteurization.
We can still get hormone and antibiotic free milk here too.
…Cows are eating GMO feed though…

        Exactly.

After the last 2 wars and the current war we are in Its hard to believe Congress is part of our government

    But I digress…

It seems the dairy factory farms are getting needed bi-partisan support, since their product is, frankly, dangerous.

I think I’ll drop a note on Peter Welch’s facebook page asking if he and Democrats are focusing on how they plan to prevent trump from destroying the country.

Did WikiLeaks have anything to do with this ?
