Conservatives see Trump as ally in ‘War on Christmas’

Posted by | December 8, 2016 12:52 | Filed under: Politics

Finally, we can say “Merry Christmas” without fear of life in prison.

“I’m a good Christian. If I become president, we’re gonna be saying ‘merry Christmas’ at every store,” Trump said in Iowa last year. “You can leave ‘happy holidays’ at the corner.”

Since Election Day, Trump has kept up the same tune.

“President-elect Trump loves Christmas and makes a point of proudly saying ‘Merry Christmas’ every chance he gets,” his transition team said in a November statement announcing that it was offering in its online store a Christmas ornament version of his famous “Make America Great Again” hat. The ornament retails for $149…

Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), who has introduced a House resolution in defense of Christmas celebrations, applauds Trump’s remarks. In a recent interview with The Hill, Lamborn said he’s optimistic the holiday will remain safe under the new commander in chief.

“I am glad he expressed those thoughts, and so hopefully that means in the future, after he’s sworn in and gets to appoint people to federal positions, that we won’t have any federal participation in squelching the celebration of Christmas,” Lamborn said.

However, the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, points out that “obviously the president has no power to determine what holiday greetings are used in stores and shops.”

“obviously the president has no power to determine what holiday greetings are used in stores and shops.”

I am embarrassed that some of my fellow humans seem to think this is a thing.

    Thanks *sniff*, Donald. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f5d961049ee476c00cd2478e745a48039b94ac99ce2b44de7beda586da7cae3b.jpg

Thank heavens the Trumpster spoke up on this! I was so worried that Bill O’Really would be the only one fighting the imaginary war on Christmas.
    .
I think it’s only fitting that Billo gets his war before January 20th when war hero John Bolton (who heroically avoided serving in Viet Nam because he had “no desire to die in a rice paddy in Southeast Asia” – like 58,000 of our finest, did), invades one (or two, or three) of 195 countries.

It’s too bad trump isn’t as imaginary as the stupid “War on Christmas”©.

      • Suzanne McFly December 8th, 2016 at 14:29

Yeah, I am still hoping someone wakes me up.

    • Larry Schmitt December 8th, 2016 at 14:20

I felt exactly the same way about Vietnam. That’s why I enlisted in the Air Force.

      • Suzanne McFly December 8th, 2016 at 14:28

Yeah, my sister wanted to join the military and I told her I would only support her joining the Air Force. She called me a hypocrite because I joined the Navy but they (Air Force) always had the best barracks and the best chow. Thankfully it was a short lived idea and she got married and gave me the most adorable nephew instead.

      • Red Mann December 8th, 2016 at 14:53

I went into the Navy in 64, before the war in Nam and when they asked for volunteers to go to SE Asia, I sat on my hands.

    Happy Holidays Everyone.

And if anyone thinks I would be offended by a Merry Christmas greeting or response, oryou think I want to stop anyone from saying Merry Christmas, you really need to turn off FOX. It is rotting your brain.

I’m not giving up wishing “Happy Yule” to all and sundry…Der DrumphenFuhrer can pry my pentacle and wand from my cold, dead hands…! So there.

    • Hirightnow December 9th, 2016 at 18:54

      “…from my cold, dead hands…”
If you’re doing it right, you can snatch it right back.

  6. mfr4 December 8th, 2016 at 14:04

Oh for crying out loud. I say Merry Christmas simply because in my culture it is an offering of good will, peace and hope you are well (as I assume As-salāmu ʿalaykum, shalom, and other sayings in other cultures mean the same).

I don’t believe in any of the superstitious mumbo jumbo (Jesus’ mother was a liar and his father was a cuckold) but I do believe that, by tradition Christmas, can be a time of reflection, goodwill, and peace.

There is no war on Christmas (except in Walmart).

You wouldn’t happen to live in Nova Scotia, would you? I hear it gets somewhat frosty up there this time of year…

      • mfr4 December 9th, 2016 at 13:52

Nope, I live on the other side, a mere 6,000 km away, where it is unseasonably frosty today.

Just got word that the drive on the North Pole has stalled at the Arctic Circle…that darn Santa has created some sort of candy cane shield!

Looks like the War on Christmas will go on at least another year…we’ll get ’em for sure in 2018!

    • anothertoothpick December 8th, 2016 at 14:37

Did Santa get the Mexicans to pay for the “candy cane shield”?

      • Larry Schmitt December 8th, 2016 at 14:40

        No, the Greenlanders.

      • nola878 December 8th, 2016 at 14:52

Don’t know, but do know that he bused in several thousand to break the back of Elf Local 205 when they went on strike back on ’09. Poor guys can’t even afford Yule Logs anymore.

Can you give us a reason for clicking on the link?

I fixed it so the image comes up. You don’t have to click.

Thanks. I am reluctant to click on links I don’t know about. Pop up hell!

  10. Mensa Member December 8th, 2016 at 14:42

I’m a lifelong, devout Christian and I wish “the war on Christmas” would win.

I’d be happy if Christmas became a completely voluntary, non-commercial, non-political observance.

Conservatives are again proving how ignorant they are.

    • Larry Schmitt December 8th, 2016 at 15:08

Ya gotta be good at something.

      • Suzanne McFly December 8th, 2016 at 15:36

Whatever happened to skipping rocks? I was good at that and I spent hours doing it as a kid. I used my time more wisely as a kid playing around as these “adults” use their time feigning shock about how “god” is no longer in our lives.

    • Mensa Member December 8th, 2016 at 15:24

      Just idiotic.

It’s another thing that bugs me about the mainstream media.

The media are not reporting on just how stupid conservatives are.

For example, they reported that white working class conservatives didn’t like Hillary. But they didn’t report their idiotic reasons for not liking Hillary.

Often, their dislike does not go beyond single words — “Benghazi” or “emails.”

Or it’s idiotic conspiracy theories — “Hillary is controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood” or “Hillary and Bill killed 50 people.”

      • Suzanne McFly December 8th, 2016 at 15:52

I think it would be biased if they interviewed a rwnj and said “look at how stupid this guy is”. I think by putting a microphone in front of them and letting them speak was the media’s way of getting people to understand who the right has become. Unfortunately most of us were not paying attention to the news in a way to become familiar with what happened to that party.

        • fahvel December 9th, 2016 at 04:41

we have a reporter in nyc and he does just that – interviews idiots and lets them ramble. Sadly, only we get to see this and it’s either terrifying or hilarious – depends on the vintage for the evening.

          • Larry Schmitt December 9th, 2016 at 09:22

That’s what the Daily Show used to do. Their interviews always left me wondering why anyone would agree to do them. They were obviously so clueless they didn’t know the whole point was to ridicule them.

          • Suzanne McFly December 9th, 2016 at 17:08

Those make good videos to watch when taking part in adult activities (drinking, smoking) lol.

    • Larry Schmitt December 9th, 2016 at 09:23

If they didn’t know that by now (2 Corinthians, anyone?) they haven’t been paying attention.

  16. Long Tom December 8th, 2016 at 18:57
