Trump education pick supports anti-gay causes

Betsy DeVos is a disaster for public education, which she’s fought against for years. But that’s not all.

Civil rights groups say they’re “deeply concerned” that the extension of civil rights protections to gay and transgender students by President Barack Obama’s Education Department will be dismantled by Betsy DeVos, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the department.

They note the DeVos family has a long history of supporting anti-gay causes — including donating hundreds of thousands to groups that push “conversion therapy” — raising questions about how, if at all, she would address discrimination against gay and transgender students.

“The DeVos family has a long, well-documented history of funding organizations dedicated to undermining and restricting the rights of LGBTQ people,” said Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, a group that advocates for LGBT rights.

However, a top official from Equality Michigan, a gay rights group from DeVos’ home state, believes her personal views aren’t accurately reflected by her family’s past donations and expresses hope she will protect LGBT kids — while also noting plans to watch her actions.

she’s a terrible pick as we know to begin with, but, this will make her appointment worse for high school teens that are gay or trans. every single one of these maggots are the worse for this country.

Good.. I hope she cleans out my kids school, who have been forcing the children to share bathrooms with each other, and making fun of kids who are not homosexual.

Most Christian conservatives such as DeVos would love to see the public education system be financially gutted and instead have the private education system — which typically employs non-unionized teachers — be government-subsidized. In addition to viewing labor unions as unAmerican, right wing politicos often regard any form of public education (k-12 or college) as part of a subversive left-wing plot to corrupt and brainwash our youth.

Unlike the public school system, private schools — which are often managed by self-serving corporate profiteers — would not be restricted from propagating right wing revisionist history in their social studies classes, nor proselytizing religious ideology (including advancing their homophobic agenda) and promoting corporate-funded anti-environmental propaganda in the science classroom.

Vouchers are intended to allow students from highly motivated families attend costly private schools which they would otherwise not be able to attend. The funding for the vouchers comes from the state or federal government, i.e., the government is essentially subsidizing the private school industry. Since private schools can select student admittance based on the family’s financial status and academic ability, this would create a further divide between the “haves” and “have nots” in our society.

Since vouchers only account for a portion of the cost of tuition at a private school, families in the lower third of the economic range would still be excluded from attending, resulting in the public school system being further saturated with the poorest students, the lowest achieving students (including ELD and learning disabled), and those that are least motivated to attain academic success.

Furthermore, comparing performance data between public and private schools is not scientifically valid — the latter can select students for admission based on entrance qualifications, and they can remove students from their programs based on poor conduct or academic performance. Therefore, the performance data becomes extremely skewed compared with public schools which legally must accept anyone who resides within its residency boundaries.
