This was such a lively thread in the good times when we all gathered at Alan.com. Is it over? Will the site be closed? I’d love to hear about it in the appropriate time…

  6. Mensa Member March 1st, 2017 at 20:00

Please keep Alan’s Liberaland running. I have really enjoyed the community here and hate to see it go away. I was a huge fan of Alan Colmes but the site he built was more than just about him. I think he would approve of us continuing.

    Thanks for considering this.

  7. Gina Bousquet March 2nd, 2017 at 08:47

I was shocked when going to “our readers say” section, it reads, “no recent comments found”. We are not absent because we want to! We miss the site awfully and we share the sorrow for having lost it when we meet at other sites. Can’t you please consider keeping it updated? We can’t lose both Alan and Alan. com! The site is so much an expression of his ideas and hope for the political future of his country that to keep it running may be a gesture to honor his memory, I believe–particularly now when Democracy is subject to threats and the country must resist, forums are so important.
We have a lot of gratitude for the time we spent gathering here, our small close community of regulars sincerely hopes those days have not ended. :)
    Thank you

    • Willys41 March 2nd, 2017 at 12:02

Maybe we should form an Alan Colmes or a Liberaland reddit thing. I’m not really sure what that means but I hear it’s been done before.

      • Gina Bousquet March 2nd, 2017 at 13:23

Hi Willis. It sounds interesting, we now have only silence and the site looks abandoned… But I’m afraid I know nothing at all about reddit. I would have to get to know how it works first.

        • Mike March 3rd, 2017 at 11:44

Reddit can be a cesspool, my advice is to stay away…
A lot of our posters can be found on Freak Out Nation, Raw Story, Crooks & Liars, Mediaite, and Joe my God …try some out.
Even though they’re bigger chatrooms than this, you’ll find a lot of nice people and lively posts.

          • Gina Bousquet March 3rd, 2017 at 12:03

I’ve been at reddit to take a look, didn’t like it. It’s good to know staying away is the best thing to do. :)
I have been at raw story and FON, was glad to meet some of our friends from here. I’ll try out the other ones you mentioned. Thank you so much Mike!

          • eyelashviper March 7th, 2017 at 12:00

wonkette.com also too, much hilarity there…

            • Mike March 7th, 2017 at 12:20

              I’ll give it a look…Thx..

            • Gina Bousquet March 9th, 2017 at 08:01

I’ve been at wonkette and had a nice surprise, found it so interesting, fun too. Will be commenting there, I think.

    • Mensa Member March 2nd, 2017 at 20:23

      I second what Gina said.

Alan did not set this up as a personal blog — he wanted it to be a community.

I think it would be a wonderful memorial to Alan to keep it running.

I just checked the “whois” listing and see that the domain is managed by Network Solutions. My guess is that Alan’s widow now has control of it.

Of course, I wouldn’t want to bother her about it now but I hope she will pass it off to someone. It could possibly even make a little money for her.

      • granpa.usthai March 3rd, 2017 at 18:31

needs a good host who will stay on top of current issues (with humor included) like Alan was so fond of doing though. For right now, I’d nominate Dr. Gonzo if he’s interested? One thing about Alan, he has lots of fully capable friends – or, even if his relatives (like a wife or wife’s sister)wanted to jump in and get dirty? As for wielding a double edged sword, well, the champion may not return again for another 2,000 years or so – it may take 2 or even 3 rotating host to fill the void.

        BUTT!

it can be done, after all, citizens of LL helped to elect the 1st POTUS from Hawaii.

      • burqa March 8th, 2017 at 17:28

Reaching way back in the memory banks – when I logged on here 10 or more years ago, the site was quite different. I seem to recall Alan saying he wanted a site where liberalism as he saw it would be presented as well as liberal takes on various subjects of interest.
Back then it was a place where one could find in-depth discussions between very smart, thoughtful, courteous people here. As I said in my post above, one had to really be on one’s toes. I have brought this up a number of times because I would like to see it get back to that level of discourse.
I believe he had the alan.com domain for years before he did anything with it, but my memory is a bit hazy on that. I recall him talking about being surprised he could get it.

  9. Gina Bousquet March 3rd, 2017 at 11:02

Life has been difficult lately. I’m very sick. I miss the warmth of this site like one misses home.

    • Mike March 3rd, 2017 at 11:46

Sorry to hear you’re not doing well. My thoughts are with you, hang in there.

      • Gina Bousquet March 3rd, 2017 at 11:55

Thank you Mike, I’m doing my best. :)

Thank you so much! I was very scared, but had news today. It seems to be benign! :)

        • Larry Schmitt March 4th, 2017 at 07:41

So glad to hear that Gina.

          • Gina Bousquet March 4th, 2017 at 10:22

Thank you Larry! :) I miss the daily dosis of your humor so much, such wonderful comments!

        • oldfart March 4th, 2017 at 08:54

I am so relieved to hear that Gina. I pop back here just to see if things have been settled and a decision made for this site. I am now on Facebook but do not like (pun intended) to find out how many “friends” are either ultra religious or ultra tRump supporters. I miss the convenience of knowing ahead of time my political views will be far more tolerated here than dealing with intolerant friends.
I retain an account on discus and have been on FON to get a feel for the site.
Have a wonderful day and be well.

          • Larry Schmitt March 4th, 2017 at 09:06

I sometimes go to FON too, and it’s better than the other options, but it’s still not the same as this site. I hope they find some way to keep it going.

            • Gina Bousquet March 4th, 2017 at 10:46

No other site is the same as this one. 😢

            • oldfart March 4th, 2017 at 12:45

Agreed, I do wish this site will remain. I firmly believe the community Alan had in mind did in fact came to fruition. It is a great testimony to his vision and life.

          • Gina Bousquet March 4th, 2017 at 10:05

Hi dear friend! So good to meet you! I’m missing our daily chatting very much. It seems FON is the place to be able to see our dear posters from here, maybe we’ll talk there. I also come to this thread to check the site I’m desolated to lose and to bump into some of you if I’m lucky. :)
As for the news about my health, oh what a relief I felt when the doctor told me yesterday. :)
Hoping to meet you again soon dear Oldfart!

            • burqa March 7th, 2017 at 20:37

Good to know where I can find you if this site goes down. Visiting with you is a pleasure I hope to continue.
I hope by now whatever health issue you had has been resolved positively and you’re doing fine. Someone as nice as you should never be ill…..

              • Gina Bousquet March 7th, 2017 at 20:49

You’re so sweet burka, thank you! I’m ok now, but missing this place a lot. We all are at FON, but I actually prefer raw story threads. Will try also Crooks and Liars and Mother Jones, maybe. No one of them is as cozy as alan. com though.
                Such sad losses…

                • granpa.usthai March 7th, 2017 at 23:00

hope they’re noticing how incompetent LIAR trump’s entire administration is?

had to fabricate FAKE email reports on Hillary (who won the popular vote by 3,000,000 anyway) – now they’re trying to fabricate a ‘secret government’ headed by none other than the MOST BELOVED POTUS of all time that is causing LIAR trump’s administration to be incompetent.

                  who would have ever guessed?

select an incompetent LIAR who in turn selects incompetent yes boys and surprised that the entire lot is incompetent?

POTUS Obama never had that problem, but LIAR trump’s incompetent staff sure does!

                  • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 12:21

His administration is a horror show grandpa, and I stopped hoping for the impeachment. No idea of what will follow…

                • burqa March 8th, 2017 at 17:04

There’s a lot of nice people at FON. I’ve put up a couple of posts and see they have some non-politics section. I haven’t looked around much but it would be nice if they have a private message feature.

                  • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 17:22

They don’t have a private message feature. But they are pretty cool, yes. :)

                    • burqa March 8th, 2017 at 17:29

Ok, well I’d like you on my FaceBook. Are you on there? Please drop me a line – I’m Bob Burqa.

                    • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 17:35

I’m right here. I’m sorry, I hate Facebook, had an account once but closed it. Nothing can convince me FB is cool. :)

                    • burqa March 8th, 2017 at 17:39

I agree. I just use it for email and rarely post stuff. I resisted joining for a long time, but everyone I emailed seemed to spend so much time there I finally got a page. I have a very small number of “friends” there – just people I really like and enjoy talking to.
Right now my email is at Yahoo, which is a total disaster.
When I get time I’ll get me a new email account somewhere else.

                    • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 18:06

My email is yahoo also. It’s not good, but I’m so used to it… I have a Gmail account but do n’t like their inbox. But how could you have my email without my exposing my email adress on the Internet?

                    • burqa March 8th, 2017 at 18:10

                      I have a way.
I’ll set up another yahoo email and you can send me your address to it and I’ll send you mine.
It’ll take me a few minutes, but I’ll edit the address into this post in however long it takes – hopefully just a few minutes.

                    • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 18:11

                      Ok

                    • burqa March 8th, 2017 at 18:37

Hello? Still there? see my post, above

                    • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 18:42

Got it, you can delete the adress.

                    • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 18:44

                      Emailing you now.

                    • burqa March 8th, 2017 at 18:47

Ok, right now it is torturing me and preventing me from doing anything, as usual. I’ll reply as soon as I can.

                    • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 18:51

                      Did send it.

                    • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 18:37

                      Ok

                    • Gina Bousquet March 8th, 2017 at 18:38

Got it already. Will email a message. You can delete it.

                    • Larry Schmitt March 9th, 2017 at 05:29

I agree about facebook. If it weren’t for my family being on there, I would never be on.

                    • Gina Bousquet March 9th, 2017 at 08:09

I stayed for a while for the very same reason, but frankly it looks like an obsessed tech journal to me. I don’t feel at ease there.

                    • Larry Schmitt March 9th, 2017 at 09:00

I do two things to minimize the unwanted trash I encounter: I have no personal information about myself on the site. Not my birthdate, my job, where I live, marital status, where I went to school, nothing. And all but one of my friends are family. I don’t want to be overwhelmed with dreck. And I don’t even follow all my family too closely, because unfortunately several of them are trumpers.

                    • Gina Bousquet March 9th, 2017 at 22:27

You have a smart way to navigate Facebook. I’m sorry for the trumpers in the family. :)

  10. granpa.usthai March 3rd, 2017 at 18:11

one things for sure, the “MSM” needs to be kept in check instead of trying to help cover up the LIAR trump administration’s acts of espionage, sabotage and betrayal of the Republic.
    1. flynn was NOT fired by LIAR trump. he hastily RESIGNED the moment the story broke about his ‘ monitored conversations ‘. There’s a YUUUGE difference, a SPECTACULAR and UNBELIEVABLE difference, especially under the circumstances.
    2. sessions is NOT an honest man. This would not have been such an issue if LIAR trump hadn’t gone a tweeting, and had his russian connections do the same.
    3. Democrats WON the popular vote by 3,000,000. seems like LIAR trump AND MSM seem to continue to forget that number and allow LIAR trump folks continue to thwart the truth.

  11. granpa.usthai March 3rd, 2017 at 18:37

Dx. GONZO to the control room.
Dx. GONZO to the control room.

    STAT!

    FREEDOM NEEDS YOU!

  12. Gina Bousquet March 5th, 2017 at 13:54

I’m afraid they are letting us get used to the idea of losing the site, giving us time to let go, before they close it. Otherwise there would already have been an announcement of sorts. :(

    • amersham1046 March 5th, 2017 at 16:54

They may be seeking a qualified like minded person to run the site.

      • Gina Bousquet March 5th, 2017 at 18:02

I wish you to be so right about that Amershan!!! :)

    • robert March 7th, 2017 at 04:17

i got this hint when i called the radio show while alan was in the hospital after the person who answered the phone said my question / statement didn’t fit the ” narrative ” Im not 100% sure but i think he said alan wasn’t coming back.

thats why i asked earlier if alan.com was getting trashed ? it looks like i have the answer

      • Gina Bousquet March 7th, 2017 at 07:15

I guess that’s our answer. Well, too good to last… What we had here we will find nowhere else, I’m sure, but most of us are at FON. We can all meet there…

  13. GregoryC73 March 6th, 2017 at 19:18

who is this chick on Alan colmes show right now? im sorry but WTF, i feel like im listening to the Factor now, get here out of here

    • Willys41 March 7th, 2017 at 11:15

You’re aware that Alan died, right? Usually when the host dies the show ends.

  14. jas82007 March 7th, 2017 at 11:00

OK, what the heck is ‘FON”? I spent several minutes scrolling this discussion, everybody uses the shorthand. It’d help if someone would spell it out. Thanks.

    • Willys41 March 7th, 2017 at 11:10

That would be : http://freakoutnation.com/ which, for a year or so, used to be merged with Alan.com

      • eyelashviper March 7th, 2017 at 12:08

Tried to post there, got message it had to be “approved”…??

        • Larry Schmitt March 7th, 2017 at 12:53

The mods are very active on that site. If you try to post videos, any videos, they automatically go to purgatory, and it can be hours before they are approved.

          • eyelashviper March 7th, 2017 at 13:19

No videos, just a nice message to familiar faces there…sigh.

            • Larry Schmitt March 7th, 2017 at 13:36

              Did it finally get approved?

              • eyelashviper March 9th, 2017 at 12:45

I think so, but after a long time, and anything else I try to post gets modded, also too.
Giving up, sadly, just hope this site continues so I can see all you good peeps here.

                • Larry Schmitt March 9th, 2017 at 13:14

I’m with you. I don’t know what the issue is with your posts. The only problems I have is with videos. But I see other videos posted, from Stoney Curtis all the time.

          • robert March 29th, 2017 at 22:29

Fon is not interactive like LL I’ve been hanging out at Disqus.com political rhetoric thread fighting all the rw nut jobs, sure could use the help. You can post your own topics there too and watch the nut jobs lose it Lots of fun ! 🤘

        • Gina Bousquet March 9th, 2017 at 07:51

Never saw it happen before there. We’d love to see you there eyelash!

          • eyelashviper March 9th, 2017 at 11:49

Just tried again to post, a few words went through, then when I edited it to celebrate, was sent to moderation.
I give up, no idea what the problem is, but not willing to deal with HP moderation silliness there or anywhere.
Will see you at alan.com hopefully, or RS, or elsewhere…
            Cheers dear friend!!!

            • Gina Bousquet March 9th, 2017 at 12:30

Eyelash dear, I’ll be at Rs and Wonkette, will see you there hopefully. Cheers my friend!

  15. eyelashviper March 7th, 2017 at 12:01

Glad I found this thread, have been missing everyone here. Saw Gina at Rawstory, and hope others will show up there if this site ends. Crooks and Liars is also good, and wonkette.com is welcoming, with very very funny writing and snark.
So nice to see everyone here!!!

  16. burqa March 7th, 2017 at 20:33

[I have been offline until now for reasons I don’t need to bore you with. I wrote the following after hearing we lostAlan]

Oh what dreadful news. The world just got a little darker.
There was so much to admire about Alan. The way he lived his life had many aspects we would all do well to copy.
First was his generosity. Back in the day, we had a teenager in the Chat Room who thought highly of Alan and wanted to go into radio. When she got into college, her class was assigned projects where they were to interview someone in the radio business. She contacted a number of radio hosts, but only Alan responded. He called her and gave her all the time she wanted. It was such a kind gesture to this shy young lady, and I have never forgotten it.
He was generous to his callers, too. Except for a very few topics, he would let someone make their point without interrupting. Alan also saw to it that it was easy to get on. There was usually no screening, just name and town. I called many, many times and rarely had to wait more than 15 minutes to get on the air. I always liked how Alan was always seeking to learn, was so curious, and would give far more consideration to views he may not have held, trying to understand.

Damn, it just hit me – no more Joe the Woman Hater calls. They were the best. Alan would get this psychotic misogynist wound up and the results were spectacular. Unfortunately Alan didn’t take my suggestion he do a “best of” show that consisted entirely of Joe the Woman Hater calls.
Other than JtWH, the best caller was Gay Randy, who also used to post here regularly.
Alan’s “Caller Clinics” were always a gas, too.
In the Chat Room we’d watch the telecast on our computers and comment on the show. It got to be funny when a few of the women would flirt with him. He wouldn’t respond to comments referring to him as a “gorgeous hunk of man meat,” but other times he’d chat back at us (if you ever watched, he had 3 monitors in front of him. One was a Twitter feed and one was the Chat Room. We’d be falling out laughing during the Radio Graffiti segment, because we would discuss our lines before and after we got them on the air. Alan would see that and just shake his head ruefully, with that ever-present smile on his face. The Chat Room was a forum in which we would relax in our bunny slippers. It was enjoyable, grown-up conversation in which we avoided controversy or extended political arguments. There were a few strange people from Sweden or Finland who would drop in every 4 or 5 months and regular users from New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong. It was a marvelous feature Alan provided.

With his book Red, White and Liberal, Alan, pretty much single-handedly, liberated the word “liberal” from the slur the Right tried to make it into and managed to cow a lot of us from using in reference to ourselves.

Alan was a happy warrior, and we’d all do well to imitate that. He was positive in outlook and presentation. In a time where there is so much hatred and bitterness, Alan didn’t succumb to going that route. Liberalism should be a positive movement. Our country was founded by liberals who set us on a liberal course and, in the end, we have always won. The future is strewn with our victories. Yes, conservatives managed to delay progress, but we always won and will continue to win. I think Alan knew that and it helped keep him hopeful. On rare occasions someone would get under his skin and he’d blow up (mildly, in comparison to other hosts), and he’d come back after a break and sincerely apologize.
One recurring subject was when some conservative would call and angrily tell Alan he knew nothing about business because he’d never been in business, and Alan would coolly inform the caller that he once owned a comedy club and knew plenty about business, thank you. Silence, then stuttering would follow.
Alan was beautiful the way he could disarm an angry conservative with a joke or two, getting them to cool off, back down, and concede points Alan made. He showed us how to do it, night after night. His example should be emulated rather than forgotten.

Then there’s this site, Alan was so kind to provide, which I joined a decade ago. I wish all of you could have been here then and seen how much better it was and could be. This was an oasis, a rare treasure, where issues were discussed in depth in a polite fashion. It was on another plane, intellectually, and if we want it, we can get that back. Liberalism shines brightest when the invective is removed, which tended to force conservatives to discuss topics rather than emotional exchanges of nasty names and personal attacks. In such a forum OldLefty, for example, blazed brilliantly, engaging and cornering conservatives, whom we welcomed. It’s much more fun when the opposition can be engaged in a calm atmosphere where they are forced to confront the crappy results conservatives have achieved compared to what liberals have done. Removing the nastiness tends to declaw and defang conservatives, and the resulting confusion is well worth the self-control required to not explode on they ass.

This is how Alan debated and we should follow his example.
Topic posts were less frequent, which gave more time to handle an issue more deeply. Liberal arguments were in full flower here then. It was such a special place. You really had to be on your toes and be ready to be challenged and know why you believed certain things.
Oh no, it just hit me. Another feature of his show was, on Christmas Eve, Alan would play “the worst Christmas song of all time.” This ditty was over 50 years old and was a narrative in which the father went out on Christmas Eve and the family thought he was killed in a wreck, but at the end he shows up at the house. The song doesn’t explain why he rings the doorbell of his own home instead of just walking in. There was plenty of other inanity and we’d bruise rib cages laughing so hard in the Chat Room.
Something else I liked about Alan was he was a fellow radiophile. He loved that whole “theater of the mind” thing. Perhaps my fave show was a marvelous interview he did with Barry Farber. No, I take that back. My favorite show was one about 5 years ago when his wife, Jocelyn came on and the love they had for each other just gushed through the speakers. No, they weren’t cooing and doving or anything, but it was so rich, so genuine, and so beautiful to hear two people who were genuinely, madly in love with each other. It was magic. Mrs. Crowly, you continue to be in my prayers.

The last 12 months or so have been awful, considering who we’ve lost. Ali, Prince, Leon Russell, Harper Lee – so many others – and now our Alan. Too bad the Queen already used the line annus horriblis because it would sure be apt to describe the last year.
It seems a good idea to remember the best in those we’ve lost, and to try to reflect the concerns and qualities we admired in them. Doing so helps keep their memory alive, honors them and gives their lives more meaning.
Alan was a gentleman. He saw things that needed changing and did his best to not just effectively promote his views but to also persuade the opposition to move in his direction. He had a decency about him, always. Alan never seemed to lose touch of that sense of decency. He was a great example of the old expression about attracting more flies with honey than vinegar. If the other side likes us and sees we are interested in what they think and why they think it, and we engage them in a courteous manner, they are more apt to bend in our direction. After all, isn’t that what we want? Alan’s approach of gentle persuasion not only caused conservatives to consider liberal views more, but it had a way of convincing fence-sitters, which we should also desire.
Wouldn’t we all be better people if we were as courteous, good-humored, generous and gentler with others the way Alan was? Wouldn’t it be an insult to his memory if we users of his site didn’t even try?
    Hmmm?
Alan was just as nice to people off the air. I heard it from his staff. I heard it from a couple of people who were acquainted with him. I also recall a post by Um Cara in the Chat Room that read, “I just met Alan in the Village. He was so nice and took time to chat with me.” I recall at least a couple other posts expressing the same thing. Yeah, off-air Alan didn’t big-time people. He was just a nice guy.
It was not uncommon for a conservative to call and jokingly say, “Alan, I hate you because you make me agree with a liberal so much.” Alan’s way got past their defenses and made them think and consider. Alan taught us a better way.
Alan treated others with the respect, patience and courtesy with which he would prefer to be treated. “Do unto others” is easy to understand, but hard to implement consistently and Alan was a master. Alan understood and reflected the old 60s values the Left had of peace, love and brotherhood which, sadly, to our detriment, have been all but forgotten.
We should learn what he taught us.
Alan gave and gave and gave, always with a smile.
    What a guy.
Alan, I love you man and won’t forget you and the better way you showed us.

Excuse me, I’m having a little trouble seeing the keyboard right now…

    latest WH lead balloons :

WH reports that LIAR trump never met with Russian Ambassador at a speech before the 2016 SELECTION.

WH reports: ‘don’t take LIAR trump’s tweets too literally.

WH reports ‘secret government’ controlled by former POTUS Obama IS causing LIAR trump’s administration to be incompetent. ( gee, I wonder who is controlling the GOP WH, GOP Congress and the GOP Courts?).

LIAR trump blames incompetent generals for FAILED Yemen attack that WH reported was a huge success until the ‘secret government’ controlled by former POTUS Obama asked what their definition of ‘success’ was? (obvious act of ‘secret government’ to make LIAR trump’s administration incompetent).

hot tip to the GOP congress – Health Care IS complicated.

best to just give everyone the exact same plan you have for yourselves, otherwise some people will talk! (and it won’t be nice for the next election).

Saw my post from yesterday and it occurred me we are resisting the loss of this site and insisting on this thread to try and keep the feeling of being home at alan. com. Such sweet place we had to meet and share not only politics, life. We miss you Alan, we awfully miss the space you created for liberal minds at the web.

    • granpa.usthai March 9th, 2017 at 09:01

I’m getting in through alan.com/politics/our readers say, for now anyway.

Funny thing is you get in normally if it’s alan. com mobile, but at the computer the only access is the one you’re using.
