Author dies after diagnosing himself with ‘post-Trump stress disorder’

Click here for reuse options!Acclaimed author Jeff Gillenkirk died of a heart attack this week, two days after publication of his final article, “The New PTSD: Post-Trump Stress Disorder.”
Gillenkirk, 67, suffered the heart attack Tuesday while teaching a class of third-graders in San Francisco, Alternet reported.
Mr. Gillenkirk, an Alternet contributor and onetime speechwriter for former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, wrote in his final article of the severe anxiety he and others have experienced in the aftermath of Donald Trump being elected president — “a painful, sad irony,” said Alternet’s executive editor, Don Hazen.
“Anguishing yet again over election results in the middle of the night, I finally realized I’m experiencing something similar to PTSD,” reads Mr. Gillenkirk’s article, which was published Sunday. “Triggered by the election, to the most powerful office in the world, of a man who’s espoused wholesale exclusion of Muslim immigrants, deporting millions of undocumented immigrants, repealing Roe v. Wade, abolishing the Environmental Protection Agency and encouraging Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia to develop nuclear weapons, among other polarizing proposals.

jesus. there have been many deaths pre-election & post attributed to tRump. from murder in his name, to suicide caused by stress and depression specifically within the LGBT community and now this. it’s only going to get worse, much much worse.

this was happening Gina when he was running. this sh!t started last year. now, it’s just being super energized by the racist. just this week, there were 2 or 3 more deaths of black youths at the hands of racist. all in the name of tRump.

I feel bad for the guy and his family but imagine what those little third graders must of thought. I hope no one told them he is dead, just say he got sick and now we have a new teacher.

i am of the belief that if a child is old enough to ask a question s/he’s old enough to be given an answer. you don’t have to be brutal with the answer, but answer in a way they can comprehend. death is a part of life and it should be explained in a manner that’s not harmful. think of it this way, if a child loses a parent to death, should you tell them that mommy or daddy got sick? what is the next question that would be asked of you if you were to say that? ~when is s/he coming home? don’t lie.

I don’t have any kids of my own and third graders seem so innocent, I would be afraid to hurt someone at such a young age. I am sure your way would be better since you are a parent and know more than I do, but they seem so fragile at that age to me.

there’s always a way to tell them the truth so they can understand it. children are smarter and stronger than you think. so if they ask you a question don’t lie to them if you can help it.
