Charlotte officer didn’t activate body cam until after Scott was shot

This means department policy was violated and full evidence is not available.

The department released two videos late Saturday after four days of sometimes violent protests here over the death of Scott, who police said had a gun. Neither video is conclusive on that question.

The grainy body camera video begins showing an officer who appears to be yelling, his weapon drawn, as he and the officer wearing the body camera stand behind Scott’s white vehicle. Next the officer with the camera can be seen striking Scott’s truck with his baton. Scott gets out of the vehicle, four shots are fired by an officer not seen on the video, and Scott falls to the ground.

The officer recording retreats back behind the truck, then doubles back toward Scott’s dying body.

But none of those moments in the first 30 seconds of the bodycam video have audio. All are silent, denying investigators and the public key details of what happened immediately prior to the shooting Sept. 20. That indicates the officer, who has not been identified, did not turn on the camera until after the shooting, when audio begins.

It’s beginning to sound like premeditated murder.

Seems to me like body cams should automatically activate when an officer exits their vehicle.
It’s completely counter-intuitive to leave the on/off switch in the hand of the person who stands to be incriminated/benefit from the video evidence.

That being said, the one video clearly shows that Scott’s hands were relaxed and by his side, while he was slowly walking backwards, when he was shot.
    That’s murder.

We let the officer decide whether or not to record, and then let the police investigate their own actions. Like an engraved invitation to corruption and ass-covering.

      Exactly

The first step to controlling the police is to get rid of the fantasy, once and for all, that the law is on our side. The law is firmly on the side of police who open fire on unarmed civilians.

If you follow the link and view the video shot by the victim’s wife, at about 2:15 the black officer in the vest drops the “throwdown gun” which isn’t on the ground prior to that point. Why is this not the major issue of the whole tragedy?
