Your dog knows what you’re saying

Be careful what you say around Fido.

So say scientists in Hungary, who have published a groundbreaking study that found dogs understand both the meaning of words and the intonation used to speak them. Put simply: Even if you use a very excited tone of voice to tell the dog he’s going to the vet, he’ll probably see through you and be bummed about going.

Using the brain activity images, the researchers saw that the dogs processed the familiar words regardless of intonation, and they did so using the left hemisphere, just like humans. Tone, or the emotion behind the word, on the other hand, was analyzed in the auditory regions of the right hemisphere — just as it is in people, the study said.

I already knew this. My dogs know more English than a few conservatives I know.

My roommates say their dog is deaf but when he is in their room and I open the refrigerator in the kitchen he comes running! I tell them that their dog has selective hearing and we all laugh!

leave it to Hungary to study a study that has been well known for at least 50 years scientifically and forever since k9 and homos began living together.

I don’t know about that. If I say “Who’s a good dog?” and “Who’s a stupid dog?” in the exact same tone, I get the exact same reaction. I would paraphrase that reaction as: Ohboy-ohboy-ohboy-ohboy…

they read us for sure. they are clever in the way they collect and process data in ways we don’t get. i’ll be driving with my dog laying in seat next to me , thinking about something i’m angry about, when a jolt of anger goes through ( maybe listening to some political bs on radio or something like that ) without me making any movements, speaking or anything, she will look right up at me wondering “what’s wrong ? what happened ?” clearly she detects emotion somehow.
