I spent most of my military career as a P-3 flight engineer. Now and then I would fly what was then known as the “school run”. Essentially we would fly non aviation types from Maine to Florida. These were sailors who were based in Florida, but stuck in Bath Maine while their ships underwent repair/overhaul. The P-3 was a tactical aircraft, but could carry a limited number of passengers. The trash can was located in the galley in the back of the aircraft. Sometimes I’d bring a bag containing empty beer cans. Every half hour or so, I would carry a few beer cans to the back, past a dozen perplexed sailors and toss them in the trash.
BTW, passing an old bottle of bourbon filled with ice tea to crew members during the passenger brief was also a hoot.
