Topless Sanders protester sues Los Angeles

Posted by | August 6, 2016 10:22 | Filed under: Politics

She says she was stripped of her civil rights and treated unequally based on gender.

Anni Ma, 25, says her arresting officers resorted to a “gender biased application” of California’s indecent exposure law when they “forcibly” handcuffed her for baring her breasts to convey a political message.

She filed her complaint in federal court in Los Angeles, admitting she was outside the Sanders rally at the Wiltern Theater on March 23 wearing a skirt and underwear – but no clothing on her upper torso other than masking tape covering her nipples with the words “Free the Nipple” and “Feel the Bern.”

…The lawsuit, which names the city of Los Angeles, the LAPD and the two officers who took her into custody as defendants, alleges federal civil rights violations and unlawful arrest.

  2. CHOCOL8MILK August 6th, 2016 at 13:45

    Bless her heart.

  3. mistlesuede August 6th, 2016 at 14:10

Sanders sure knew how to bring out the crazies.

    • Kick Frenzy August 6th, 2016 at 14:45

Yeah, those crazy kids and their thinking about equality for women.
      What are they thinking?

We should probably bring them to heel, eh?

      • mistlesuede August 6th, 2016 at 14:57

Oh yes Kick. Nothing says women’s rights like walking around with our boobs hanging out for everyone to see.
You’re right. She is a kid and has no friggin clue what life or women’s rights are about.
        Neither do you.
Still a sore loser I see.

        • Red Mann August 6th, 2016 at 17:26

That’s right, if Gawd had wanted us to be naked, we would have been born that way!
It is about equality of treatment and “boobs hanging out for everyone to see” is kind of regressive.

          • mistlesuede August 6th, 2016 at 19:23

What is regressive is clueless young male and female Sanders nuts who equate the struggle that women have gone through to be treated equally with women’s bare chests. They need to spend some time studying about the struggle and show some respect for those that came before and the rest of us now.
I hardly think Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and other suffragettes were fighting to walk around topless. I haven’t heard Hillary Clinton talking about it and she has fought for women’s and children’s rights her entire life. I sure as hell have not spent my life fighting to be treated the same as a man so I could.
            It’s a moronic conversation really.

            • Kick Frenzy August 6th, 2016 at 22:30

Yeah, it’s not like they would use fashion to make a point.
(Except for the part where they did… wearing bloomers, which were considered exceedingly indecent by the majority.)

Oh, and let’s not forget Pussy Riot.
According to your expressed views, they should never have been taken seriously when fighting for their rights and equality.

If you’re going to seriously sit there and tell me that girls fighting for equal and fair treatment should be dismissed as moronic children, because they are using a known and common method of protest that draws attention to female specific issues… then, to be honest, you’re the one who needs to learn something about feminism.
Here’s an interesting timeline of toplessness:
              http://gotopless.org/timeline

It’s alarming that you would consider yourself a judge and jury of this topic when you obviously are wholly ignorant of topless protest as a form of bringing attention to women’s rights.

And no, sticking up for someone fighting for equal rights is not being a sore loser.
But continuously hanging onto that trope easily makes you a sore winner.

You are seriously comparing underwear to bare breasts? I’ve been to actual protests, and women aren’t walking around with their shirts off. Not one. This is a childish display by a little girl with a childish mind. No wonder you relate to it. Real women don’t need to bare their breasts to get attention to protest about anything. I protested and helped to keep a Hooters “restaurant” out of a large, local mall where plenty of families would be passing by it. Guess what? Everyone at the protest was dressed. We were taken damn seriously and we won.

Hate to break it to you, but there is zero chance that women are going to be walking around this way as a part of normal daily life in schools, boardrooms, malls and anywhere else we are found. BUT, we will be wearing underwear.

I guess now that you can’t argue ad nauseum about Sanders, you will want to keep arguing about this dumb subject because it was one of his whacked supporters. Talk about frivolous lawsuits and a waste of valuable time. Maybe someone else will have the time to waste. I don’t.

“I’ve been to actual protests, and women aren’t walking around with their shirts off. Not one.”
Have you forgotten when women were protesting the right to be topless in New York…topless ? They won that right and they have been allowed to go topless in all New York state parks…not that they do.

                  • mistlesuede August 7th, 2016 at 10:50

Thanks for making my point. Aside from a few fringe groups of wingnuts who go on display one day a year, no other women are doing so. I should know since I live in NY.

                    • oldfart August 7th, 2016 at 12:05

                      I remember you said so.
                      My state too.

                • Kick Frenzy August 7th, 2016 at 13:55

I’m comparing methods used to gain attraction to reach a wider audience with the points they are trying to make.

For instance, dumping ice water on your head has absolutely nothing to do with ALS, but yet that brought enough attention and donations that it has lead to an actual medical advance to combat ALS.

I’m sorry that you think people fighting for equality, decent treatment and their rights are a waste of time.
I can assure you, it is not a waste of time to any of them.

Being physically roughed up and arrested is not just child’s play.
It’s not just some silly little kids playing at politics.
It’s serious s*t and your ignorant condescension is a slap in the face to all of them, feminist or otherwise.

Good Evening, I think Folks like us are going to have a lot to talk about for the next three months.I see a lot of laughs coming up. Have a Great day tomorrow. :+)

    • Gina Bousquet August 6th, 2016 at 22:15

What would you then say about the several bare breast feminist protests for the right of women to bare their chests like men do theirs? Since I started reading American news sites I saw a number of them.

      • mistlesuede August 7th, 2016 at 00:14

There are always exhibitionists. Their “cause” is a joke and no one serious takes it seriously.

      • The Original Just Me August 7th, 2016 at 00:54

Gina, Hi , I need to track you down some more. I enjoy your posts and talking to you. :+)

        • Gina Bousquet August 7th, 2016 at 01:00

Hi O! Anytime dear! Only now it’s 2am here, I’m going to sleep. We’ll talk later, ok? :)

          • The Original Just Me August 7th, 2016 at 01:16

I think I’ll try that sleep thing for awhile myself. Good Night.

            • Gina Bousquet August 7th, 2016 at 14:47

I suppose I should say Good Morning, now! :)

Anywhere a man is allowed to go bare-breasted, a woman should be allowed as well. There is no question about that.

  5. Gary Parillo August 6th, 2016 at 19:41

I hope she set a precedent for all future protesters!! No complaints from this old man.

  6. The Original Just Me August 6th, 2016 at 22:19

I’m always at the wrong place at the wrong time. I even had Old Dried Up School Teachers. Life Ain’t Fair.

How the hell does she keep those black squares on? Especially in the wind…

I’m betting that when mom and dad told her to be strong and hold on to your convictions
…this wasn’t what they had in mind.
